Alright. So I figured this would be good for General Discussion....

On my Y34 Infiniti M45, my driver's side mirror gives me a triple image....Like if there's headlights behind me, I have one in the middle, one about 1/4" above it, and another 1/4" below it.

I've been thinking that this MIGHT be an issue with the tinting on the mirror? But I'm just not sure. I've never heard of this, nor have I ever seen anything like this. I googled it, asked my mechanic buddies, AND searched a few forums.
I was wondering if anyone has ever had this problem, or if they have a solution to the problem? I was considering taking the mirror off, sending just the mirror to my lab (I'm an optician) having them strip the tint off the lens with their AR stripping machine, and re-tinting the mirror myself. But I have no idea if they'd do that, nor do I know if it's even tint, or where I'd get tint like that.

Any help appreciated!

Is yours a 2004 or a 2003?

Reason I ask is that I broke my passenger mirror time back (my fault) and found a junk-yard replacement on-line that I got painted silver (on the outside, of course!) and installed.

After installation, I noticed that the replacement passenger mirror was mildly bluish in its reflection. Different from my driver's side mirror ... clearly different albeit minor, so I have always thought that it came from a 2004 rather than a 2003 (my model year).

I don't think this is an after-market applied color - it may just be that the 2004 was color'ed different right from Infiniti? This is a SWAG, of course.

Regardless, I have to admit that I have not worried about multiple images showing up. I will do a check some late evening ...

Now, on your specific issue: I have no idea is there is a tint to remove - I will also check that on my 2003 and 2004 (right side) mirrors.

If you have access to a lab, then you might consider doing a front-silvering on it - this would definitely remove multiple images. BUT, I am not sure how this long this would survive in the long run ...! :)

Also, if I don't see too many general responses here in General Chat, I will move this thread to our M35/M45 forum (leaving a link behind), since you may get a "car-specific" response there!

Or have you already asked in there?

P.S. If you are new to NICO, welcome!

Are M mirrors electrochromic (auto-dimming). If so, it could be an issue with the electrochromic coating or controller.

Hmmm ... a good question! I hadn't thought about that.

As far as I know, the outside mirrors do not auto-dim. Well ... at least, not on my 2003 Y34.

Maybe they do on a 2004?

This would probably be a pretty good place to start looking:

Ah, yes! I shoulda thunk of that.

I checked and it looks like the outer door mirrors have automatic movement functions (memory for fob and also lowering to see the curb), but no automatic dimming function on them! So something else is the cause of the problem observed by the OP.

I have a 2002 Infiniti Q45 that I just purchased and have the same problem with the driver's side mirror. In searching the internet for what this could be, I found this conversation. Were you able to discover what the issue is and how to remedy it?

Welcome to NICO.

I certainly never found any problem in my 2003 Infiniti M45 Y34 ... so no solution that I know of. I hope the original person who posted here sees it and responds!

Given the model year of your car, it certainly sounds like a common problem to those years perhaps.

In today's world, this might be seen as an old thread, but hey I browse the general forum once in a while and solutions never age, right?

So, your mirror is most likely leaking the fluid that gives it its electronic dimming properties: topic595392.html
