If you get illegal tint what happens when you get your vehicle inspected?

Unless the vehicle inspection directly asks the inspector to check the tint with a light meter, they can't tell you your tint is illegal. Check the inspection sheet. If it does ask for it, then just pay someone off to pass you, or find a shop your cool with to do it. I used to do these for Virginia. We have tint laws, but our inspection sheet doesn't have a window clarity test. Good luck.

My dad's car doesn't have any tint besides the factory tint and there was a box on his inspection sheet for tint but it was marked n/a. so do you think they would notice and if so if its to low do you fail? Do you think just rolling in with the windows down would work?

Depends... here in NY basically any shop does inspections and for the most part they would be happy taking your money and handing you a sticker without having to touch your car at all.

In NJ however, the state inspects most cars and there are very few independent inspection stations, as a result, they dont just want the fee for the inspection, but a "surcharge" for letting a tinted window pass.

Worst case, they fail the car, you lose the $ for the inspection, and they give you a ticket.

Then you remove it, or just get a sticker elsewhere.

I have my Altima registered in PA and my SRT Grand Cherokee registered in NJ and both have 15% all around. The inspectors have ALWAYS consistently told me that the tint is an issue for the police, not for them to worry about and I have never failed an inspections due to this (or failed one at all). I've just had two NJ Pigs pull me over because they are too busy being d*** faces and not worrying about the 15 year olds selling guns and coke out of their lockers.

So yeah, unless it's hardcore different in NC or SC (whatever, they're the same to me), I think you'll be fine. But, as LBC was touching upon, I'd definitely find a state inspector that is not government (a certified auto shop). Another incentive to having a private shop inspect your vehicle is that many times the inspection has a longer validity period.

Hope it all works out. Who cares about tint? It's 2008 - get used to it! When I get pulled over, I told them I catch professional shop lifters who are illegal immigrants (this isn't really my job, I'm just good at catching them in my store lol) and that I sometimes stake out from inside my car.
