Check with your DMV folks about your legal limits for tinting. I don't think it is illegal, just moderated with rules.
Here in Florida it is a very popular addition to vehicles. However, our legal limit is 33%, meaning that the tinting must pass at least 33% of a test light's light. I have opted to install a 25% layer, so I am not quite on the up & up. Actually the rear window and two side rear windows can be any tint you want. Just the two side front windows must be lighter, and you cannot tint the windshield. I wanted it all even, so had everything done except the windshield.
Tinting has several practicle functions aside from looking great; UV protection, and a huge help with keeping the interior cooler. I can't believe how much cooler my V's interior is now. My installer claimed that his product provides 100% UV protection, so that is a big plus too!
