Hey, just an FYI on the timing chain guide removal:

I spoke to a couple Nissan techs (one at the dealership and one that had been working for Nissan for 20+ years and now runs his own shop) prior to doing mine, and they recommended that i NOT remove the side chain guide, and that if i was replacing the chain and tensioners anyways, there was no reason to remove the top guide either.

the deal according to them is: as the chains and tensioners wear, they create just enough slack in the chain that you hear the "ticking" against the upper guide. the components probably have a lot of life left in them after that occurs, which is why Nissan decided to inform ka24de owners about the optional removal.

the procedure, although stated otherwise elsewhere, should NOT include removing anything other than the upper guide. PERIOD.

also, i still have my upper guide after replacing the chain components and have experienced no ticking after over 10,000 miles of use.

there is a side guide and an upper guide. if you remove the side one, there is a chance your chain could be just slack enough to jump the sprocket and cause your valves to hit your pistons ruining them.

replace your chain and tensioners.

if it's stopped working correctly, replacement is your only option.

if you have your climate control set on "fresh" ie not recirc, air will pass into the cabin.

if your car is not overheating, you dont have a problem thats affecting the water pump.

What all is required to remove the top chain guide? I'm new to the forum and just starting to tune my ka24de. I have that same knocking noise, but only at idle speeds. As soon as I touch the gas, it goes away. Could this be just the top chain hitting that top guide? I don't want to take something off that will cause my engine to fail.
