Well i am having trouble with my timing issue on the car. The car just starts backfiring like no tomorrow car also lags in power. Befor i describe it i should add something about the car. Its for a 1990 nissan 240sx. Previous owner had it rebuilt but sold it to me not running. He said all it needed was to put together the vacum hoses. I made the mistake by not even starting the car and taking out the motor. During this i took out the emssions off and only left my cold start sen,IACV and FPR.I also peiced together a turbo. I checked the timingchain and it seemed fine to everything lines up. The car has a very rough idle jumping between 200 to 1000rpm. Ive read a lot on write up about doing this and its just not working. I checked to see where the timing was at with my timing gun and its way off. it seems it a whole 180 off. The dist is completly ADV since its the only way it will start idle roughly. But when i disconect the TPS i double check the timing and its about only a 1deg or 2 off from where it should be. But I cant turn my DIST since its already as far as it can go. Ive removed the oilpump and dist severl times now to adjust the timing. Please help me out hereThanks.

Just take things back to the basics.

Verify that you have the fireing order correct:check all wireing for loose connections:Any obvious (or not so obvious) vacume leaks?I would hand turn the engine to #1 TDC and verify that you are in fact at TDC on the compresion stroke. Then if Rotor is not pointing at #1 Plug wire then manualy re-set the Timing as if you had just taken abart the engine.

I know some of this is duplication but it sounds like a step got missed at some time in the past. Some times the only way to find the missed step is to start over.

Good luck and let us know what you find.
