my point is that we are not in disagreement. we are speaking of different things.

...except that part about all gas having the same btu output. other than that i think we are square bro.

stop confusing the guy. The manual for my S14 actually says run at least 91 octane. Don't listen to what other ppl say what to run. Not sure what it is for S13, but just stick to what the manual says, anything higher than that is a waste, anything lower and you're not getting all the performance you can.

if you want to advance spark timing go for it. it's not that hard, thend ecide how you like it.

Since manufacturer recommend 92 octane, this leave yourself a very small area for timing advance even if you use 93 octane. Advancing your timing may only gain very small hp that only dyno can pick up, before you knock sensor retard your timing back.

If you do advance your timing, your knock sensor should pick small ping/knock before any catasophic disaster happen. This will keep you at the safe side.

I use 93 in my S14 and have my timing advanced 5 degrees without any knock. It's been this way for about 6 months and runs GREAT!!

"The additives that raise the octane rating for premium do nothing to increase the basic energy content of the gasoline," Young said. "In fact, they actually dilute the energy content. A standard engine can obtain optimum spark advance with regular, and therefore derives no benefit from premium."-north county timesthanks daedalus

I'll have to disagree, my car feels real lazy on bottom end with stock timing and 87 octane. If I had some extra cash, I'd test all of this at the local dyno. Perhaps I could test it at the drag strip, but, there are too many variables involved.
