All this talk of 16ish degrees timing at WOT has got me thinking, I really have no idea where my timing is at right now on my SOHC at WOT, but stock timing is 15* not 20 like on the DOHC, so i'm not sure how the ECU adjusts for timing in the map. Does anyone know if the base timing is just lower, and it has a more aggressive timing progression in the top end, or if it it's just step for step less timing? The motors are almost the same except for some deck height and head displacement, I don't see how timing should be so much different, static compression is lower on the SOHC also.

With stock timing at 15* do you think retard will still be needed once I get past 7 pounds or so? My timing was somewhere around 18* I think when it was NA, and I had no problems to speak of even on 87.

Well I can add this, I was misinformed and ran 17 deg timing for 1k miles while turbo with no pinging and no ill effects. I figured 5 lbs so 3 deg timing retard at the dist would be fine. I then went to 12 deg after I found out that the stock timing was 15 deg btdc instead of 20. This is on an early production 89 with the higher comp btw.

yeah I am sitting right around 12 right now, and I mean it pulls fine, but I think I could squeeze more out of it. I wish I had a knock sensor :\

I like the first knock sensor setup. It looks similar to the MSD Unit I use, cept I get an audible signal as well.

What's wrong with using a GM, or Ford or whatever knock sensor and having your SAFC read the knock? Can that be done with any knock sensor?
