how do i set the timing on a 96 nissan altima

You will need a timing gun.

1) Connect the pick-up wire from the gun to the first cylinder plug wire (cylinder closest to the crank pulley).2) Start the engine and let it warm up. 3) Find the "nub" sticking off the the front timing cover directly above the crank pulley.4) Aim the timing gun at that nub and see where the timing lines up at. 5) To adjust timing, you simply loosen the two 10mm head bolts holding the distributor in and you rotate it VERY LITTLE to change timing.6) Your ignition timing should be set at 20 degrees, plus/minus 2 degrees. The farthest most marking on the crank pulley TO THE RIGHT is your 20 degree mark.
