getting ready to do a head gasket on my car and was wondering a few things. tried searching, nothing very informative came up.

1. how necessary is it (if at all) to replace the timing components (chains, guides, etc). when should they be done? (mileage wise)
2. best way to apply headgasket? getting it to seal properly? keep it from moving while setting the head on? tips tricks etc? (i know about the vids on you tube and whatnot)
3. what else should be replaced when doing a headgasket? t-stat, water pump, gaskets?

im not a noob when it comes to mechanical work, just never done a headgasket on these cars/engines before. any help/hints/tips are appreciated.

Best thing to do, is get or build a timing chain tool. Basically its a tool that goes in the hole when you take your cam gear off to take off the head. The too holds the tensioner in and holds up the chain up it doesn't fall. This will allow you to just take off the head, with out having to take the front timing cover off :) Make sure you make a mark on link and sprocket, and set the engine at TDC.

Here is a picture of a tool I made out of pcv pipe and electrical tape hehe. Notice the pcv pipe and the chain on it, Bottom had some electrical tape wrapped on it to fit snuggly into the hole, to hold the tensioner in. Il take a better pic tomorrow if needed.
