I know this a frequent question and post subject so I thought I would share my limited experience... I pulled out the guides about a month ago on my motor. The process went very smooth, but the noise was still there.(Although quieter). Now I started searching more and more to try and find the answers. First off, I worked the upper tensioner free as is mentioned in the write-up on this topic. I could barely move the lower tensioner, but that is not something that can be easliy removed, so I decided to close it up and try it out. Noise was still there. Low Oil Pressure??? Ran a small amount of Seafoam through the motor and went from 5w-30 to 10w-30. Still no change.I purchased a new set of tensioners and took things apart last night. This time I could move the lower tensioner a little bit. So I went to work on freeing that up some more with penetrating oil. Replaced the upper tensioner and closed things up. Result- this morning HUGE difference.Everything is quiet and I can finally hear the motor, not that annoying rattle. Sorry for the long post I just wanted to say that I think too much stress is placed on removing the guides and not enough on making sure the tensioners are working properly...

So you ended up replacing JUST the upper tensioner, right?I might have to do that because I have some rattle, but it's not that serious at the moment.

That's correct. Getting the lower one moving probably had a greater effect since the upper was OK. I just replaced the upper because I could.

Nice, I am removing my guides this Saturday, i have a couple questions if you could answer them.

Yes I am pretty much the stupidest known person when it comes to engines but I am learning.

Is it okay to spray WD-40 onto the tensioners while they are attached?

and also do you know of any guides that have pictures of how to put on a tensioner?

thanks

1st- I used some crap called "Ion Force" that a Ford guy gave me years ago. I used it SPARINGLY! I've got a 1000 miles before the next oil change, so I didn't want to trash my oil.

2nd- The upper tensioner is easy. 2- 10mm bolts and it's off the car. That's when you can really soak it and clean it good. I also "primed" mine with fresh oil before putting back on. The factory upper tensioner has the little hook on it to aid in installation...? Just make sure you un-hook it after it's in.

Keep in mind I replaced my upper tensioner as I have read in many searches that is the best way. (After cleaning, if it doesn't spring back with some force I'd consider replacing it.)
