Timing questions

I recently replaced my timing cbain . The pulley on the crank has 6 notches on it . which notch is 10 before tdc. Doesn't the 10 degree notch line up with the little stob on the engine. Right now it will only adjust to the far right notch. Why? Did i get the dist. off by a tooth when i reinstalled it. I can take the bolts out of the dist and it will adjust to any notch or degree if you prefer. Also it started running real rough and died. I took off the dist. cap and blew it out with air and some dust came out its running fine now .Ever heard of this. Did the dust cover some of the crank angle sensor slits. computer says all is fine

sounds like the dist is in wrong. if its anything other than a ka24e or a z motor then it could also be the chain.what car?
