Timing Question

I have been reading some past threads on the Q and racing, and quarter mile times and such. And many people have mentioned having the timing adjusted to around 15-18. Now, I understand what that does, and how it helps. But What are the down sides to that? the dangers?

15 is stock setting, advancing to 16,17,18 increases power at the expense of possible pre-ignition/detonation, which the knock sensors{if operational} detect and then back off the timing

In cool/cold climates you may be able to advance the timing and gain power/mpg without creating knock....tougher to do in hot weather, especially with crappy fuel

Also, these are with stock ECU or with octane enhancers/racing fuel. NICO and JWT ECU assumes 15° BTDC. Best bang for the buck is the ECU.

Performance is never cheap if it does not harm.

A G50 is not a inexpensive car to maintain without it going wonko very soon due to neglect. Keep it up to OEM as new specification for best performance economically.

Advancing timing at CAS will probably not ping, and as long as there is no ping you're increasing perf. for free as well as fuel economy. The worst you can do is try it, and if she pings set it back where it was. No harm done. Provided it works you'll see maybe 2 more hp, liberally, and an unnoticeable increase in cruise fuel economy.
