I can not get a stable idle, car would dieI cleaned the MAF. Got betterI cleaned the IACV valve. Got betterTightened up all my vacuum with clamps and zipties. Got much betterMoved the ground from the Coils directly to the engine ground. Idle got way better. Now im down to stable 1000 with the TPS unplugged.I plugged in my TPS and it gets to searching between 900-1100.I rotate my CAS left and it started purring so much better.NOW how the hell do i find out at what degree my engine is timed now that I rotated?DO I need to pull valve cover off set it to TDC and reinsert my CAS as below?I have questions on that also.

According to FSM there is a paint mark on the CAS I dont have a paint mark. Not only that but the mating marks are not what they seem, I have multiple ones. I am sorry I dont have pics at the moment. Can someone point me to a better how to or better way of doing this? I dont have a consult computer in order to set my car in timing mode, any help would be appreciated.

there are 6 notches on the crank pulley. Far left denotes 5ATDC, then the next one is 0 TDC, then 5, 10, 15, and 20 BTDC. I have never seen them painted from factory, so I usually swap some paint on the marks.

If you don't have a timing light, go out to sears and pick up an inductive unit. Their inexpensive and reliable.

Hey Tenkawa, thank you for your response. I have that part down on the crank pulley, second notch in from the left. I was talking about a paint mark on the actual CAS.A timing light can be used with the s14? I thought you couldn't use that with a VTC engine without putting it into timing mode....Im confused.

I have never timed in an S14, so I've never heard of not being able to use a light.

The marks on the CAS are more like punch marks. I think the ones on mine may have had yellow filled in, but it's been years since I installed a CAS.

And 15 degrees BTDC would be the second notch from the right. Second from left is TDC

he's right mine had yellow in the punch marks too. but on your cas you should only have two marks that get aligned when you insert your cas into the head. or is it three, one slot mark and two round hole marks, hence the illistation. you should really try to post some pics so we could better help you with your problem

Guys thank you for your help. There was no yellow marks on my CAS.But what I did was slow my roll and go back to the basics.1) I took the valve cover off and cranked the shaft(hehe) until the intake sprocket dimple was at 10 o clock and the exhaust was at 2 o clock and the marker on the main pulley was on the second mark from the left. 2) I then pulled out the CAS and made sure it was lined up properly as per the FSM.I think this is where I went wrong the first time. I made sure that as the CAS mated(hehe) with the exhaust sprocket, that the mating mark on the CAS shaft(hehe) was lined up with the mating mark on the CAS outer sleeve. It took about ten minutes to get it right, and now the engine purrs.Thanks.
