Does anyone know how to set the timing to a 91 nissan 240sx 2.4 dohc? having problems with timing marks it's like one is missing. every book says something different and the dealerships in my area have no clue on how to fix it. it's a chain not a belt.

thanks

Yep the ka's use chains. The timing marks on the crank or the timing marks on the actual chains with the engine covers off?

If it's the actual chain that's gonna be a pain in the butt job with setting it back to TDC, pulling the tensioners and adjusting the sprockets to line up properly and redoing everything bascially on the chain job.

If it's just the markings on the crank, did the dealerships really try to move the distributor at all? Or is the crank actually missing like a mark there? In which case did they clean up the crank before checking that?

well there was never a mark or on chain or the crank sprocket, at all. Even the new dealer parts. basicly it was a deal F**K in a motor. they never put the mark there and i have also talked to to other people that have the same motor i do and they had the same problem, so basicly i still in a ****ty situation.

thanks

Are you trying to adjust the timing to get the motor started? If so, set the motor at TDC - take out #1 spark plug and put an extra long socket wrench extension down through the hole and onto the piston head. GENTLY and SLOWLY tap the ignition key until that extension comes all the way up, you will know this when it starts to fall back down or stop. You want it as close to the top as possible. Now set your rotor at the #1 firing position. Put everything back together and try and start the car. Rotate the dizzy itself clockwise and counter clockwise while trying to start the car until you can get it to idle well. Then rev it at 3K RPM or so and spin it around some more until you can tell its running smoother. If you still can't get it to start though, that means your on the wrong tooth. Take the dizzy all the way out and KEEP IT STRAIGHT and turn the gear a little bit clockwise or counter clockwise enough to change teeth, put it back in, and try and start her up. Again, turn the dizzy itself back and forth while trying to start it. If it still doesn't start, try going another tooth counter clockwise - and if that still doesn't work, go back to where you originally were and then clockwise 1 tooth.... etc... You will eventually find it. And if your not trying to get the motor started yet, look in the official FSM (I believe you can get it off of 240sx.org) it shows how to install the timing chain correctly.

oem chains do indeed have the different colored links. You just gotta keep an eye out on em and count the links.
