I've searched for this issue can't seem to find a resolution.

I have a 91 240sx, everything was working perfect. I stripped the bolt on my distributor, so I disconnected my spark plugs wires and pulled out the distributor, so I could have room to extract the broken bolt. When I started the car back up, the car ran erratic, and cut off, I twisted the distributer a little bit because I heard that's how you adjust your timing. I can't get my car to run back to normal. When I took out that whole assembly is it possible If I entered in the assembly at a different angle, It would have changed my timing.. I'm sorry I don't have the mechanical terms for each part, I'm new to working on cars, but very eager to learn.I'll post some pics later, if my descriptions were too vague. I'm going to buy a timing gun now, but can anyone tell me the location of my pulley with the marks on it. I've looked at each pulley but can't find the marks. Any suggestions or advice to this would be greatly helpful.

Well, I am not sure about the DOHC, but on the SOHC the distributor and the oil pump shaft are connected once they are inserted into the block. If I remember right (it's been well over 5 years since I did this) there is a keyway that has to be alligned.

Another question, did you mark the distributor and the and the block before you took it out? If you don't get it back in the right place, it won't run right.

On the SOHC, the number one plug wire on the cap should be at about the 1 o'clock position on the distributor if it's placed correctly.

Try pulling out the distributor just enough to clear the drive gear, and turn it a little bit and put it back in.

Also, do you have a timing light? There should be a sticker on the hood somewhere that will tell you your stock timing.

You might also want to pick up a Chiltons or Haynes manual on the car and go through it. They are pretty helpful at things like that.
