okay, (Sohc) I did a timing service, new chain,tensioner,blahblahblah...however she has a hard start and doesn't idle or rev right. With the Distributor fully advanced, she gets better but, there still are no visible timing marks on the crank w/a T light...

I'm sure everything was aligned correctly...BUT the Dist./Oil pump spindle/shaft.The pic in the Nissan Serv. manual is horrible, has anyone done this before? I set it best I could by eye. I believe timing is off by a tooth one way or the other...

somebodyanybody:help Please!

Put the engine up on tdc (indicated by your crank pulley). take the distributor off and make sure the drive spindle key (cresent, moon shape notch) is in the 11-11:30 o'clock position (looking at it from side of engine). If it is not, you need to pull your oil pump and move the shaft untill it is. Then reinstall the distributor and try again. You should be able to get about 18-20dbdc will full advance (full clockwise) position.

I'm in the same boat as you mate, I can retard my timing so it barly eks out at 10 *btdc but that's the max. I think I may be 1 tooth off as well. (or my Cam and Crank gears aren't aligned, like it jumped a tooth when my guide broke)

From what I gather if it's 1 tooth off then the crank markings aren't going to help you since the CAM gear isn't lined up correctly with the crank (right?) so now I'm lookin at pulling that damn cover off for a 3rd time and checking the CAM gear and make sure it's lined up to the crank. (Sigh)

Another thing to do is remove the oil pump, turn the spindle 1/8th of a turn, reinstall it and the distributor and try and get it to idle/run smooth from there. (trial and error)

Or can we put the engine to TDC (crank marks) take the Valve cover off and somehow align the CAM markings correctly (trying to avoid taking that Timing cover off again).. How would u get slack in the chain to do that? I have the alignment marks in my book, so I can see if it's right or not. I figured since the guide broke and the timing chain was fine it didn't skip any teeth. But now that I can't get it running correctly the CAM gear must be out of alignment. :(

Because right now when it's running it don't idle too well, diesels like a mofo and bogs under power.

SCore, I was 2 teeth off after I put the engine to TDC, lined the crank marks up to the TDC mark. Pulled the valve cover off, and the CAM markings were at 2:30 posisiton (should be 3:00). So I unbolted the CAM sprocket, had a buddy push against the upper guide with a pry bar to give me slack, moved it 2 teeth, bolted it back on. No need to take the front over off (SOHC).

Runs fine now, no more dieseling, or rough running. I really didn't want to take that front cover off again. :)

Just a heads up to let u know u can move the sprocket without taking that front cover off.

Should have checked that when I had the cover off, but **** happens.
