timing mess up? please help

Information on the naturally-aspirated KA24E and KA24DE engines.

finally got everthing off, but I am not sure if I am in the right position for the cameshaft (the big pully) and the cam , I might be mess up the timing, would anything tell me how to tell if it is off or I am in the right position ... by the way would the dot on the gear help to indicate in the right place..thanxall i want to know is what I shoud look for if I really mess it up and what i can do to fix itwould a Timing gun help? or is ther other tool I can find out? thankx you again

There are 2 dots, one on the cam sprocket, one on the crank sprocket. Each dot should line up with the 2 silver links in the timing chain. Then you will need to set your timing when finished. I was sure it was 15 degrees before TDC, but someone else said it was 20. Maybe it depends on the year of your car. You may have to look that one up.

If you have to rotate the cam or the crank SEPERATE of each other to get the links to line up, loosen the rocker arm shafts so that all the valves CLOSE! If not, you may wind up knocking a piston into an open valve if not careful. Once aligned, just tighten the rocker arm shafts back down.
