Can any one tell me where on the timing belt cover the timing mark is. I think it is the raised mark at about 2 o'clock around the pulley. Am I correct or is it somewhere else. I can't figure out how to time this thing. I got the light working, I point it down at the mark. I see the ticks on the pulley and I see what I think is the timing mark. But the timing appears that the timing is at 30° of advance if you read left to right 0°, 10°, 20°, 30°. This is almost backwards from what the manual says. I've tryed it with and without the tps unplugged. And also with and without the AAC valve pluged in. When I unplug the TPS the engine idles up. I need some direction.

I DON'T REALLY UNDERSTAND HOW TO READ THOSE MARKS EITHER..... SO I ASSUMED I WAS DOING IT RIGHT BUT I STILL CAN'T GET IT TO IDLE RIGHT.

i have the EXACT problem. There is a notch on the timing cover by the crank pulley and i got it dyno tuned and its right at 30 degree advanced. The notch is on the last timing mark.

Hmmm... I wonder.

The R32 GTR has 20º base timing, and the FSM says to measure timing using the loop going to the ignitor.

But the RB20DET should supposedly have 15º base timing... should it be measured at the loop or on the #1 plug wire itself?

How are you guys measuing timing? Because it seems to me that the plug probably fires a little bit after the drive signal to the transistor. So if you compare measurements using the #1 plug wire and the ignitor loop, you would expect slightly different measurements. So maybe a 20 at the loop corresponds to a 15 at the plug.

Can anyone tell me whether the RB20DET FSM says to measure it at the loop or at the plug? GTRshop?

Ah, yep, I just found it. A thread on skylinesdownunder says measurements at the loop are about 10º ahead for manuals, and 15º ahead for autos.

So.... how are you all measuring timing? Because if you use the loop, you should have 25º. And frostedflakes, you should have 30º since you have an automatic.

I used the loop on my rb20det manual and I got 30° advance. So I really am running 20° advance. I don't think that is right. I I doesn't run like it has 20° advance. It seemes more like stock. Maybe 15° above is for the manual? I'll try and test it again soon, I'll test from both the loop and from the primary wire on no. 1.

I'm not 100% on the idle I have to get an accurate way to measure it
