I am having trouble setting base timing on my dual cam KA. I have it to where it idles fine but when i try to increase the rpm's RAPIDLY it falls flat on its face and almost dies. When I ease into the throttle it's a little rough but when it gets to around 2000 rpm's , it'll run great and I can give it a lot of throttle from there adn it wont die or sputter. And also when I put a load on it it'll die, so i can't even drive it. Someone PLEASE help.

Check the vacuum hoses on the EGR valve at the back of the head. On the older ones the host to the valves melt from the heat. Make sure the EGR valve itself is popping up and down. They stick as they get carbon on them.

I set my timing at 16 degrees. It starts and runs fine. I believe the first mark on the pulley is 5 deg BTDC and the next mark is TDC. then 5 10 15 20 after top dead center. If anyone disagrees please post because this is how I read the diagram in my book.

If you have a KA24DE, your timing should be 20BDTC, not 16.

also check you air intake hoses. mine was acting funny by getting it to idle high and when i reved it it would kill. then i saw one of the hoses that runs to a pipe under the intake man. was crimped

OK, thanks a lot guys for all your help. It's raining here so I'll have to go at it later. If you have any other suggestions, please post. Oh yeah, i forgot to mention ALL of my emissions stuff is removed, including the butterflys in the intake manifold.

Thanks Insanity, I thought over what you said about 20degrees and then reset mine to 20. I noticed that it increased the idle to 8-900rpm which smoothed it out as compaired to before when it was set at 16degrees it was idling rough a couple of hundred rpm lower.

changing your timing will change your idle, and vise versa. You should be set at 20BTDC at 700rpm. But 20BTDC at 800 or 900 should get you close enough to not notice much of a difference between that and "perfect" timing. But yeah, if your timing is retarded even a little, I've noticed the engine runs like crap.
