i'm in the process of putting my SR back together, and i'm currently setting the timing with the cam's. the problem is everything will be lined up, the bottom end is at TDC, the dark links match up with the markings on the cam gears, and the dowel pins on the cams are at 10 and 12 o'clock. but when i put in the tensioner, it moves the bottom end counterclockwise while the top end stays the same. how can i prevent this from happening?

It doesn't really matter. So long as the links are all still mated to the sprockets properly you're good to go.

Don't forget to rotate the crank back and forth a few degrees to help the tensionor push out and engage the guide properly.

what its doing is everything will be lined up perfect, but once i go to rotate it to release the tensioner, the bottom end moves some before the top end even catches. i'm taking it back apart to see if it skipped a tooth, so i'll try to keep you updated.

The chain has some slack in it until the tensionor bites into the guide. You'll see that you can roll the crank a few degrees before the top end catches. That's natural.

I usually put the front cover on after I have the motor timed in just to verify that no teeth have skipped.

yea, i should have done that in the first place. and i should have taken pictures, its kinda hard for me to explain it and probably hard to understand lol. i may take some just to kind of give you an idea of what i mean. i've done it before and never had this problem, thats why i'm a little confused as to what its doing.
