I just bought a 91 240 with a ka24de off of a friend and haven't got it running like it needs to yet. It would back fire when revved and wouldn't idle smoothly I have replaced mass airflow, plugs, wires, tried adjusting timing with gun set to 20 degrees decided to check that it was set to compression Top dead center followed this tutorial zerothread/358025 and found that when cylinder 1 was at compression TDC the rotor on the distributor was at number 4 and would only go to 1 at exhaust TDC.

I pulled the dist and turned it around to be at TDC Compression on Cylinder 1 and now it won't start at all. since then I have tried replacing dist cap and rotor still nothing. Also have taken one tooth to the right and one to the left and still no luck should I turn it back to where it ran sort of. When it did run before it wouldn't rev past 3000rpm

if it wont rev past 3000 its def maf related it could be the plug to the maf or the maf its self they can go bad really easily. I'm on my third right now haha. check voltage from the maf. zerothread/254283

Would the mass air flow keep the car from starting now. I'm still trying to get it to start since i rotated the distributor 180 degrees. Both lobes on cams at TDC is going to outside and now the distributor is on #1 it originally was on #4 before I took it out and turned it 180 degrees. When it was on #1 before the cam lobes on cylinder 1 were toward the middle. It would actually start before I changed it but it would back fire and wouldn't keep a good idle, also shook the engine a lot. Still not sure what the problem is I know it shouldn't be firing on exhaust stroke but it actually started then

Did you pull the dizzy at tdc? Was the rotor facing near the #1 plug cap?

When you stab the dizzy, was the rotor PERFECTLY lined with the #1 plug cap?

However! When you stab it, it rotates, and moves over a tooth, so you'll have to compensate for that. I did this several times before I got it right, but when it's right it'll fire almost instantly and rev great.
