I believe that the distributer vacuum port is above the throttle plate at idle, so it should not matter if the distributer vacuum line is disconected, or not.
I have the factory service manuals for a Datsun Pickup, Model 521 series chassis and body, Model L-13, L-16, and L-20 engine, and the Emission control system, 1970-1971. The manuals also make no mention of discommecting the vacuum line.
When setting the timing on my engine, I used the factory setting as a starting point, and then advanced the timing until I heard spark knock on hard acceleration. I knew that was too much advance, and retarded the timing about 2 degrees from that point. Running the timing as far advanced as possible without spark knock gives you the most power, and the best fuel economy.
DO NOT LET YOUR ENGINE KNOCK! It will hurt it, and it will cost you a lot more money to rebuild your engine, than you would of saved from fuel expenses.
If you do not want to take the time to find the optimium timing for your engine, just set it to the factory recomendations.
