I am in the process of changing my timing kit on my KA24DE. I have the crank in the TDC position. This IS the 2nd mark from the left, right? It is kinda off color. Looking at the FSM, the cam gears are in 10:30 and 1:30 position. Mine are in 11:30 and 2:30 positions. Looking at this, it looks like it may be a tooth off on the idler sprocket. Am I right in assuming this? You guys know what it should be. The relationship between the two marks don't look centered. Please help, my car is in peices right now.

Thx Charlie

what ever you do do not force the crank to turn. remove your spark plugs while you do this so you can really tell when there is resistance when turning the crank. If you feel it stop turning or you could bend a valve.

your marks should be 9 and 12 on the cams. you crank you should not be using the pully to index it use the mark on the chain sprocket on the crank. Your chain should be indexed to match those marks on the sprockets.

WELL, Ive got a little down time. My buddy dropped my idler sprocket and it has a hairline crack in it. So hes buying another one before I put it back together. When you say 9 and 12, you mean 9 on intake and 12 on exhaust right? My chain does not have but one mark on each chain. I bought an ebay timing kit for $140. I counted what it was and am planning on just putting it back the way it was. Main reason Im going for this is because I got a baseline dyno last week and it was 129hp/140tq so I figure it is working ok. (if it aint broke, dont fix it.) This timing replace is a HELL of alot more than I expected. Pretty much a teardown/rebuild with no bearing replacement. When my "odd" color mark on the crank pulley is at the needle, the crank key is pointing straight up. the mark is about 5:00. And the cam gears are as I stated above. (11:30/2:30) I should be okay right. These hp/tq numbers look about right?

I really dont think that my timing would be off from factory. Would it? It doesnt seem that anything has ever been tinkered with.

ok if your looking at the marks on the cams sprockets they are about that clock setting but those marks are intended for lining up the index marks on the chain which you say you dont have. the actual keys on the cams is what I was refferring to when I said 9 and 12. If you have a service manual look up the link count between gears, count them off and mark the chains before you install them. Trust me even if it looks right it can be a tooth of when all is said and done. having the chain indexed is a sure fire way to get it right the first time.

Thx. I counted the number of exposed links on the chaintop and bottom of the drivers side guide. It was 5 top and 5 bottom to the mating marks on the crank and idler sprocket the new and old guide are the same. One thing that is worrying me.......I put the lower cover on, to save time later. It DOES have stops to hold the chain in place right? Thats what the FSM says and it seems to be this way.I hope this is correct, the whole bottom end of the motor is put back together right now........
