Just wondering what kind of timing light do I need for my RB25det series 1? Do I need to get a special one because of the coil pack?

Also, where do you clamp the cable to (if you need to do such a thing)? Pretty much, just tell me what to get and how to use one.

Thanks

Any timing light will work.

There are nice ones, and really nice ones like the one Snap-On sells.

You hook the inductive pickup around the loop near the ignitor I believe... since there's no plug wires to connect it on.

I tried that with my 20 and it couldn't work. My friend put on top of the coil pack on #1. and bam got it to work.

Has to be inductive, the clamp on style.

Okay, on the ignitor, the bundle of wires leading to the coils, there is a black/pink wire that loops and it is right outside of the bundle. That is what I should be clamping on?

Now I've been doing some searching. On the 25's, I guess you need to disconnect the tps and adjust the idle by either the idle adjustment screw under the throttle body or you can also adjust it with the ECU dial (not sure of that). Turn the idle down to 650. Then see what the timing is. Adjust with the CAS to get it at 20*. After the adjustment, connect the tps and the idle should be around 800. Is that correct? thanks.

15 degrees, 20 if your car is automatic. Only use ECU screw to adjust idle when you want it set higher than 650, and that screw changes it a maximum of 250 rpms.

I clamp around the wire coming right out of the plug on the pass. side of the ignitor that goes the the "1" on the ignitor.

Well, finally did the timing thing and the car idles at around 650. Timing is now at 15*. Before I started I checked the timing and it was around almost 30*. Now my CAS is set all the way clockwise. My idle is staying at 650 though. Did not jump up to 800 rpm like I read somewhere. Still need to test drive it.

SUCK SUCK SUCK!

Car runs like crap. Revs really slowly. Backfires more and even louder. How should I go about advancing the timing? Should I advance it until I don't see anymore improvements or what?

Also the RPM went down to 570-590. So I dialed it up to >650 and ran it again. Still feels like crap.

Checked the timing and it was fully retarded. Did the whole proceedure again. The rpms are now up in the 820 range with the idle screw fully turned clockwise. The timing is then adjusted to 15* and the tps plugged in.

Sounds like you had the timing light clamped onto the wire backwards, it'll make it read crazy like that. At the loop I think mine is set to 25 degrees and idles around 850

With the last setting it runs good. Good pull. Rev wise when I get to a stop light, it dips down to 650 rpm and kind of bogs then jumps to 750-820 where it runs fine. Actually the car vibrates around 750.

Should I just turn the idle screw to up the idle some? Also the timing light was on the loop. And it registers at 15*

I turned up the idle screw to around >800 rpms. Didn't double check the timing. Ran the car and it runs awesome. I normally have hesitation around 5500 rpm at WOT. That is now gone. Did a run tonight. down shift to 4th and revved it to 7100 rpm and shifted to 5th. Took that all the way to 62-6500 rpm and max speed was 138 mph on the gps unit. That is not the full max speed. I just cut it short since I hit traffic. I would try to bring it up to 7000 but no point really. My tires are small so it kills me at high speeds.

For the record the KA HUD speedo registered 120+ kmh. I'm just happy there is no more hesitation.

I know you had it clamped at the right spot, but, you can have it on backwards. The clamp can go over the wire in two ways, you can clip it over, or you can turn the clamp upside down and clamp it, but the signal is flowing thru the loop in one direction and has to therefore flow thru the clamp in the proper direction or it will be off about 15 to 20 degrees.

Well I hope I got the clamp on right the second time since now it works great. Thanks Nick for the replies.
