ok. im running a neo 6 with a walbro fuel pump... my FPR is stock.

today i lowered my idle down and advanced the timing a bit to 17-18 (will recheck tomorrow again)

now to my understanding, when you advance your timing it goes towards the leaner side. now my idle is a steady 850-900 (does not fluxuate nor want to stall)

now im assuming that since the walbro pump causes the car to run richer due to the stock FPR, that advancing the timing to run a little leaner would help...

when i did this i noticed a big difference... smooth power all the way to redline...

now my real question is, is there any long term or short term effect by doing this? or am i completely wrong in doing this?

stock timing on the NEo is 15+- 2 degrees so you not advance at all.......................

i had my sII 25 timing advanced to 17 and had the popping at idle too. drove the car for over 10k miles in a little over a year and mine is still fine. im not saying its not bad but it didnt hurt mine(its really annoying though). now i have pfc and tuned the problem away.

poping could be a air leak in the exhaust system. do you have the cat installed?? We recommond that everyone with a $$$$ engine get a wide band o2 sensor and gauge installed to keep track of the engine Inovate, AEM and other are not that $$ as a new motor!!!

FAST-DATSUN, have you ever heard of using this? I saw it off JGY-Customs site

Greddy 60mm air fuel ratio gauge. Comes with wideband sensor, control box and wiring. super nice and very accurate. This is one of our favorites! - $269

And since i dont want to be a thread jacker, advancing it just 2 or so degrees on top of stock shouldnt be to hard for it, if at all, RB's are stout motors at least running pretty stock with everything. Timing and just a little bit of tuning makes an incredible amount of difference on these motors. A friend of mine made about 30 hp and about 14 tq off an SAFC2 through tuning alone on stock timing.

i wouldnt worry about the popping..........the honda owners sure don't:)As for advancing your timing, you should be fine. I have an auto rb20 in my s14 that was recently converted to a 5-speed. The car hit a 'flat spot' in the powerband above 7,000 rpm. so i played with the CAS and advanced the timing till it produced smooth power. No pinging , just power. I learned that the automatic ecu actually runs 20 timing where as the mt should be 15. So i bought a mt ecu and had my timing set to 15 and the car idled much better, but had no power?? so i switched to the auto ecu and have been on it since. It doesnt idle as nice, but it runs waaayyy better than with the mt ecu. go figure.

LOL! It wont make power past 7000, thats when the power band is on its way down, thats why you're hitting a flat spot, thats near factory redline.

sorry, I meant 6k rpm, not 7. What is the cause of that anyway, small turbo? Isnt the actual redline 8,000 rpm? since i am on the auto ecu, I dont think my car even has a rev limiter on it, but still, i dont dare take it past 8k, even though i have heard people say they take their rb20 to 9k "ALL the time"

Those people are full of crap, the redline is around 7100, and taking it to 9k on a stock oil pump makes me laugh becuase the engine would be starved of oil on the stock pump in most situations if its a series one.

edit: he was talking about an rb20.. red line is 7500. rb25s1 s2 =6900... sometimes teh ECU doesnt catch it until 7100 and then brings it right back down.
