On my 1978 280Z I have had to pull the timing case cover. Now would be a good time to replace the timing chain if it needs replacing. How is the wear-out determined on the timing chain? That is, how does one determine if it does need replacing?

I did not want to move the engine from the present position that it is in. That is, I don't want to turn it any because I have marked the position of the distributor and don't really want to change it's present timing (it was ru8nning excellent at that position). So, I really don't want to replace the timing chain unless it's needed.

The engine has 113,000 original miles and I think the chain has never been replaced. I have read that this chain should be replaced every 30,000 miles or so. Is this true? If so, it's way overdue.

no, timing chains are normaly lifetime on the car, its timing belts that have to be replaced every 60k or so, but if the links show cracking or if the teeth on it are worn out, then you can replace it, but its most likely fine
