As recently it was pointed out in a previous thread, I warn you to use OEM quality parts when replacing timing chain components. I used a " topend" timing set and after a mere 5k on the rebuild notice a nice chain slap. Last week I was driving it and the noise got very loud and I started hearing a wretching noise almost like a belt siezing noise. Also from the get-go I had a startup chain slap that I had never experience with my old set.

I took the valve cover. I found good tension, but the chain was only running about 60% on the tensioner guide. I also found excessive slack on the slack side. I also found that the crank bolt was not torqued (prolly caused the wretching noise).

I went to the dealer and purchased the following Tensioner $80Chain $50Guides $30

This of course cured all the problems including the startup slap. 90% of it anyway.

So Let this be a warning to all you who'd like to save a dollar. I don't enjoy wasting the better part of my weekend repairing and replacing "NEW" parts so don't make the same mistake that I did. The sad thing is I could tell the parts were signifigantly cheaper when I was putting them in the first time, I just assumed that they would work.

To devious, the thread containing the differences in chains and quality was a good read and good info. I wish I had seen it sooner 12,000 miles sooner

oh man, thats unfortunate. The ka24e has such a small margin of error in the chains before they rattle its a shame. The main problem is that cheap chain, oem chain is worth it.

btw. pci timing components kit for ka24e includes an oem nissan band guide, and tensioner. Still in nissan packaging inside the box. Chain is still the 06B variety junk. Buying this kit and then an oem chain is the cheapest and best setup imho.

Can you elaborate on "PCI"? what brand is that and where can it be found. What about pricing. I'd like to post the info on nissanminis.com

I prolly could have gotten away with just a chain and stretching the tension spring. But the whole process was so aggrevating that I just laid the cash out. And without doubt I have quality parts in there.

I thought nissan recommended the removal of non-replacement of the chain guide???

The two guides on the upper chain may be removed (top between the cam sprockets and on the driver side), but the lower guide is required. I believe the lower guide has been redesigned.

For what it's worth, I bought all the stuff for my timing chain job at the dealer, then within 5K it's doing it again. Just happens at startup though.

My car makes a sound when I let off the throttle and just coast. When on the throttle it isn't there. Is this a symptom of a chain tensioner or something going out?

I carry the PCI timing kits, as well as other good aftermarket brands. Pricing for the ka24e full timing kits is $70-80 excluding shipping.

The ka24e does not have any removable or non-replacement guides.
