I have a 1996 Q45. While I was changing the valve cover gasket on the right side, I noticed more play in the timing chain "tc" then I would have expected. I am not sure what is an acceptable amount of deflection in the tc between the camshaft cog wheels. In the attached picture you can see the tc with 1/3 of an inch between the chain and the guide. Is this normal or acceptable for a Q45 with 150K miles. I removed the valve cover and top timing chain cover and visually inspected the guides. I did not notice any significant wear and the tensioner seems to be working. The tc appears tight on the left side.

That's normal, but your engine could use some BG Quick Clean on your next change, an Envirolution engine flush, or a regimen of high detergent oil with frequent changes, or all three.

Thanks Brian! Great Advice!

Yes, the picture shows just how dirty things are inside my engine.

Where can I get BG Quick Clean?

Is an "Envirolution engine flush" something that is done in a repair shop...... or is a product that I can purchase?

Any recommendations on oil usage? I recently started using Castrol Fully Sythetic 5W-30. I have been changing the oil every 4-5K miles. Should I change it more often and/or use another oil after doing the BG Quick Clean.

BG Quickclean can be purchased at http://www.everythinginfiniti.com

I believe Envirolution Engine Flush is something that can be done at a shop.

And last of all, yes, you should start doing 3k oil changes with Mobil 1 especially with an engine as dirty as yours

1.) If Joe doesn't have it, try Ryno Performance Products http://www.ec-securehost.com/R....html or even eBay.

2.) It is a service. http://www.envirolution.com

Call Tom Mackin to find a shop near you.

Yes dirty... I'm not sure about a '96 but with no oil pressure there will be slack.

You don't have VVT, so I don't know if this is a huge difference from '90 up.
