I'm going to be replacing the timing chain tensioners and all that good stuff on my car soon, and when i got my new timing chain tensioners i saw that there's the little pin thing you turn to tighten and loosen it. now when i install it do i have to tighten it myself or does the tensioner tighten itself once i start the car or something. If i do have to tighten it, how tight do i tighten the tensioners? As tight as i can? and once i do that, do i leave the pin thing in there, or take it out? Sorry if this is confusing, and i appreciate any help.

Thanks

Do you mean the thing that looks remarkably like a thumb tack? If so, that just to keep the little piston from popping out. What I did was submerge the tensioner in oil, at least the part that has the little hole that mates up with the oil passage on the block and then pull the little pin to prime the tensioner.

Don't know if that's necessary, but that's what I did. I then just bolted the tensioner in. This was an upper chain tensioner on a KA24DE, BTW.

I'm not quite sure what you're referring to. The tensioner is operated by a spring and oil pressure. Other than torqueing it to spec to attach it to the block, there's nothing to tighten.

Just out of curiousity, is this an upper or lower tensioner?

Sorry for being unclear.

Ok, here's a picture of the two tensioners

What i was originally asking was if i have to twist those pins to put the tension on the chain, but now i heard that all i do is just bolt those on, and with all the guides and chain in place just pull the pin to set the tension. is this true? and do i pull the pin on both the upper and the lower tensioners?

Thanks for all your help

Yeah. The pin is just there to hold the piston in place.

If you pull it out right now, the piston will shoot out(there's a spring under it). Just don't point it towards your face when/if you do it.

dont wry the piston wont fly out and hit u in the face haha the thing only extends to a certain length and then stops but installation would be easier if left in

Just to be clear, what BadMojo is saying is that you can "prime" the tensioners by submerging them in oil and releasing the pins just before installation. This will draw oil into the chamber and hopefully keep things quieter the first time you start the car. Otherwise it'll be full of air and be noisy for a little while till the air clears out and oil fills the chamber.

how long does it take for the air to clear it and oil to fill the chamber?
