I am just about ready to start my sr swap. Do you guys think it would be wise to change out the tensioner before the motor goes in? i was told by a nissan tech that the sr has the same tensioner probs that the ka has. he also says that a revised tensioner was released to fix the problem. should i change it or trust whats in the sr now? thanks again and sry for the bad typing, im writing this from my psp.

I'd say go ahead and replace it.A) A lot of importers lie about mileage on the older S13 SRs, so you really have no clue how close to the service interval you are for the chain and tensioner. Heck, if you've got the coin, I'd say go ahead and drop a new chain, guides and tensioner in the motor. Nissan revised all of the parts. The guides are plastic coated metal now so they don't snap like the old full plastic ones do.

B) The tensioner itself is relatively inexpensive. It's only a $70 part, so you're not breaking the bank to replace it.

I would just change out the whole timing chain with a new kit. It's $200 for a new kit with new chains, tensioners, guides and you won't have to worry about the timing system after your engine is up and running. Last thing you'd want is to replace the guides and have to pull out your front cover again while the engine is in the chassis.
