Timing chain tension guides

[89 240 SOHC]

My bone stock 89 240SX is making an insane knocking sound from the front and has no power, sometimes doesn't even start. My buddy told me to check the Timing Chain Guides....I priced em out and found that they're only like $13 but it seems like alotta work to get at them any tips?

timing chain is a ticking sound, and its not insanely loud either, it sounds like you have another problem, is it a detonation sound or a rod knock sound, like a bunch of soda cans bouncing around?

I pulled the rocker cover and started wiggling lifters? the things that push the valve open...sorry Anyways they are all extremly loose when the cam lobes aren't touching them I think this may be my problem....If I'm right how the heck do I make em tighter do I buy new ones?

Also I tried to wiggle the timing chain while the rocker cover was off and there is zero slack in it.

yeah, that sounds like you need some lifters. you just replace them and it is very easy. i think each arm is like $15 from one of our sponsors-->it might have been midway, courtesy, pinnacle, mossy,etc. i dont remember which one. you pretty much just unbolt the rocker shafts and do the arms on a bench.

to make sure that that is the problem, do a search on lifters in the 240 technical section, i did a writeup on how to check them from the fsm, ill try to dig it up real quick...

I took the rockers out, I can't move any by hand at all....I'm gonna price out some new ones tomorrow.....from the looks of the metallic stuff in the oil filter I might wanna price out a conecting rod and piston.....
