I gotta do it as well, its quite the ordeal...try a fsm, the book that has directions for almost all repairs on your car, as it has many differnt repairs for your car... its mainly removing all the stuff that blocks the front, draining the block of coolant and oil, jacking the engine up and dropping the pan, remove valve cover, unbolt head, remove uper and lower timing chain covers, removeing and replacing parts, SETTING YOU PHYSICAL TIMING(cam timing) PROPERLY and putting everything back. easy enough to do but labor intesive, and it affords you a few oppertunitys to make expensive mistakes, i.e. unbolting the head, setting cam timing. Download a FSM and follow very closely, and when you think your have your timing all set turn the engine over manuely a few times and check you timing marks again to make sure everything is still lined up(and dont turn the engin backwards anytime after you set the timing, including if you have to remove the bolt from the crank if you used that to turn the engine over)

http://www.240sx.org/links/ins....htmlExcellent How-to. I did notice that the FSM said in changing the timing chain that you would have to unbolt the head. The how-to doesn't show you unbolting the head, and it doesn't make sense to me that you would have to. Perhaps there is a way to avoid it?

you do not need to unbolt the head. All you need to do is this (assuming you've drained oil and coolant, and got it to TDC<---- Very important!!!!)

0. Set motor to TDC!!!!1. raise engine a bit so you can unbolt the oil pan (PITA and takes much longer than you'd expect)2. pop the valve cover off, pull the crank pulley off (27mm), pull the belts, fan, and front cover off (you'll see why you had to drop the oil pan when you pull the front cover), and undo the covers for the front of the head2.5 Note the location of the cams and the crank. They've got keyways, note em.3. now you've got the chain. undo the tensioners and remember how the tensioners look as there are two tensioners for a new DE motor. Keep the bolts around.4. undo the guides at the block and the upper at the head5. remove the chains (two chains)6. Do the above steps in reverse.

NOTE: MATCH THE COLORED LINKS TO THE PUNCHMARKS ON THE SPROCKETS

Do: follow the FSM or some sort of guide that will give you a visual on the matter or look around for pictures. I can almost totally assure you there are tons of pics you can look at to get an idea of what you're getting into before doing it. I've done this job more times than I'd like, I'm certain Chris (The Man at the Nissan Online Mechanic) has too. You bungle on anything, I'm sure he'll be around to help, and maybe me too. Ha ha ha

How many miles can the DE motor go before the chains should be replaced?

i just did this a few weeks ago, basically take out all the fans, shrounds etc, and i raised my engine to take the oil pan off. Make sure that the engine is at TDC, take off valve cover, cams, front cover, upper and lowern then the guides and the tensioners, and just start your way at the bottom and follow the FSM (you don't need to take off the head) and make sure you match up all the marks with the gears and the chains. Of course there's more to it but this is the basic run down, its not that hard but just time consuming. If you have any specific questions let me know.

That is for the KA24E, also I forgot to mention, don't forget to unbolt the oil pick up tube after you take off the oil pan, if you don't take off the oil pick up tube then you can't take the lower timing cover off.

Just exactly how do you raise the engine? Bit of a silly question, but it is mentioned so often, it might be good to have an idea how to do so.
