I deleted my old post because I thought I wasn't getting the car, well it turns I am getting it, kick ***, I know, but anyway...

The guy says the timing chain is alittle loose. Is this a critical problem? If the chain did end up skipping a tooth or breaking, how much would it cost to fix?

Any information of timing chains would be nice, thanks

(I did search btw)

You really did a search and didn't find any useful info? Cost to fix maybe not, but there's a crapload of info on issues with timing chains on the 240. Which engine does it have?

KA24DE is the engine, all the search results were for a rattling noise from timing chain guards and things like that. Nothing about a loose timing chain and how to tighten it back up

you dont tighten them up, you have to replace them if they are stretched. if your chain were to skip a tooth you will probably end up doing a cyl head rebuild as well as replacing the pistons, if the valves hit them. these engine are interference engines, and it has to be right or things will hit.

your cause of the loose chain is probably due to the worn guides and tensioner, but if you tear down the engine that far to replace them you might as well replace the front main seal, chain upper and lower, both tensioners, all guides, that is really the only way to make severe chain rattling go away.......

have you tried to run a thicker oil, like a 15w50 when mine just started to make noise, I switched to Mobil 1 15w50 and it does two things, #1 it will clean all oil passages and anything that runs on oil pressure (due to the additives in synthetic) #2 a thicker oil will also slightly increase oil pressure. helping the tensioners push harder.

But most likey it is the chain being streched or a guide broken or missing....

There is a link to see all the parts and prices that you might need for the repair. I would recommend using only nissan parts for this repair, but I do know napa sells a complete kit for like 700 bucks or somthing but buyer be ware.....

hope this helps..

larry how do you eliminate the very popular mystery noise on the KADE engine that eminates from the upper timing chain area. It is most popular on the altima but is also heard on the 240. I have seen many techs attempt to fix this by replacing the chains, the guides and tensioners, the cams them selfs. all done with no success repairing the noise. It only occurs at a mid to upper level idle anything above 1100 rpms and it is gone if the rpm drops below 750 it also goes away...If you have been around nissans as long as I think you have you know exactly what noise I am talking about. I myself have never attempted to repair it myself. Am just curious if any one there has ever done anything to address the issue.
