I was told by my mechanic that he needed to take out the engine from my 91 240sx ka24de to take off the oil pump and adjust the timing chain. Any advice before he does that?

Yeah dont go through that mechanic. what your supposed to do is take off your timing chain cover to get to the timing chain to replace it there is no need to go through the bottom of your motor. The timing chain cover is on the front of the motor under the front of the valve cover.

Here's a great how-to for replacing the timing chain on a SOHC (KA24E) 240sx:

Nope, Drop off the Clutch fan and Shroud and there is plenty of room.

The oil pump is external and super easy to remove... its putting it back perfect takes a little more effort.

"adjust the timing chain" or replace the timing set? Chains don't break often, tensioners rarely give out(barring other oil issues), the chain guide is about toast at 100,000 miles(after that the chain slaps through a water jacket in the front cover.

Don't let that mechanic touch your stuff... He obviously doesn't know what he is doing or he is ripping you off out right.
