timing chain

I think my 1990 240sx might have a timing chain prob. the engine only revs out to about 5500 them sounds like it shuts down then comes back at 3500. I just did a valve cover gasket and I noticed on the drivers side of the engine the chain had alot of play. how much play should there be and is there an adjustment on the tensioner and if so how do I do it?

could also be your alternator doing it too thats the symptoms mine had when it died.

no cause i didnt have an alternator installed yet but thanks
