If the motor doesn't have that infamous rattle at startup, there's no need to replace any timing chain components.

As far as the hunting of the idle, check for a sticking EGR valve. If you haven't done a tuneup lately, do one.

First off, you dont want to touch your maf sensor with anything. Those things are super brittle and will break in a quickness. Use MAF sensor cleaner spray and follow the directions on the bottle.

Second, you mean your running your car without a freaken MAF? Those things arnt something that can just be discarded as some kind of unnecessary car part lol.. So you like driving with a 2500 RPM limiter, getting terrible gas millage, ect?

clean your egr valve might be sticking as mentioned earlier but your IAC could be goin out if it only happens when your at a stop a.k.a idling... is what i believe i got out of your post.....tuneups help but leave the timing chain alone unless you hear the oooo so famous "marble in can" noise.....and destroyyourmind....get a MAF with whatever money you have dont wait....case closed.

The IACV is located on the passenger's side of the engine, near the back, below the intake manifold.

WAIT first check for vacume leaks they happen alot on 18 year old cars. my favorite way to do this is get a can of carb cleaner and (being wary of fire hazards0 spray all the vacume lines if the idle jumps up that means carb cleaner got sucked through a hole in the vacume system when i had a kae my intake gasket broke and that was the problem so spray your intake gaskets as well

many possibilities, I'll check first for codes, egr port gallery restricted or plugged w/ carbon deposits, secondary ignition (cap, rotor, wires, etc),or it might need additional grounding for maf sensor(common problem if u got injector code or O2 code).
