I have a 96 Q45 with 133k on it. Do I need to replace the timing chain?

The answer is "no and not for a long time"

The 'chain guides' which are different from the chain itself was only a problem with 90-93 Q45's. The chains themselves should last 250,000 miles.

If you would like to be more educated on the issue, use the search button at the top and look up "chain guides". Lots of good info on this subject.

BTW: Welcome to NICO, we are very glad to have you. Why don't you give us some details on your car? Color? Maintenance records? Problems you may be experiencing? And post some pics when you can. Again, welcome.

Welcome 96Q!

No chains + guide issues at all in your car.:fruit

Nick explained it well, but a few members have looked at their chains at well in excess of 300,000 miles and they were in great shape.

Thanks guys. I love this car. I bought with 100k on it. I was talking to some guys about it and they were wondering how long it would last. I said I thought a long time but wasn't sure what the norm was. One guy said I better change the timing chain, he must have thought it was a belt.

By the way, the car is silver with black interior. Transmission is a little sluggish between 2nd and 3rd but runs great other than that. Have a squeek in the front suspension on bumps.

Suspension rubber bushings wear out and so do trannys that are not maintained to a much higher level than factory minimums. If you want another 100-150k you need to start intensive care now.

install a transmission cooler.Completely bypass the stock heat- exchanger. Both B&M and Hayden makwe coolers that fit our cars well.Get the largest one you can fit.

Do pan drop w/ filter change (the one many dealers deny exists, or say is "lifetime")

70268 is used by most Q45 owners.

The one I bought from Summit racing had all the installation parts needed. If you are in a relatively temperate climate (like I am in San Jose), then bypassing the radiator is the right way to do it. In cold climates, you actually need the radiator to warm the the ATF a bit in very cold conditions.

Yes, I would think so, since you would need the heating effect in winter. Maybe some other folks can comment on this too.Quote » is it easy to installor wil i need help?? i do alot of work myself but not a mechanic [/quote] Here I do not know the answer ... my external cooler was installed by an Infiniti dealer.

cool, my infinity dealer will not instal any after market product,i wanted them to install my tokyko (sp. ?) struts instead of the infinity struts which failed me 3 times they would not do, also when they replaced my rear crossmember (under warrenty) they did not want to put my aftermarket 24mm sway bar back on, when i convinced them to they put it on wrong.

This is why you need to find a good independent technician or a semi-knowledgeable shop to do these things. Putting on things like struts and rear sway bars aren't rocket science; however, when working on the Q engine, ALWAYS use an Infiniti Certified Tech as it's very easy to screw things up in there.

Your Infiniti dealer is a doofus - The stock Infiniti struts ARE tokicos. And why would they care about the diameter of the sway bar?

Sounds like you need a new mechanic.

i stopped going to infinity when my warrentee ran out at 75,000mir u sure about the struts, because my origional front struts went bad on 3 occasions, when i installed the tokicos not only r they holdin up but perform superior. the dealor was just a prick.

They're Tokicos, just a different model.

Interesting! So far, Frontier Infiniti in San Jose has installed my B&M cooler as well as Irotor cross-drilled, slotted rotors for me. They gave me a discount on the labor too. I guess it helps to have purchased two Q's from them - one new and one from their lease return department - and I have been going to them for over 12 years now for all the work done! :)
