when do i need to start worrying about changing the timing chain?

You don't even need to think about a timing chain until 100K. Belts stretch and crack, chains stretch initially then stabilize.

generally speaking you don't have to change a chain, they might stretch to some degree and if you ever rebuild the motor it's a good idea to replace it but otherwise just enjoy the joy of timing chains, belts on the other hand have to be replaced frequently
