Within the next few day's I'm finally going to be picking up a 240sx. It's an 89 with 106k miles, auto unfortunately, but I'll deal with it. I was wondering if there were common timing chain problems? I'm willing to throw out some $ to get it replaced, just so I won't have to worry about it later on down the road. And if anyone has any idea what it would cost to get it done, that would be great.

cost is around 800 bucks i believe, mostly labor. the parts only cost me around 120 bucks, depending on how much you replace. It's more worth it to do it yourself if you are pretty handy.

The only problem with doing it myself is, I'm not too handy with cars. I might be able to get a buddy of mine to do it for cheap, so i'll see how it works out

You don't need to be handy with cars. What you do need is a place to work, and a weekend or two to devote to the job.

These detailed steps will walk you through the chain install:http://www.240sx.org/links/ins....html

You will also want to have the FSM handy because it has important drawings, torque specs, and warning tips.

Note:Regardless of whether of not you do the chain yourself, you will still want to invest in a genuine Factory Service Manual (FSM). The FSM is so much more clear and informative than those damn confusing Chiltons manuals. The tons of money you will save on ridiculous shop labor charges will offset the cost of both the FSM and a whole bunch of tools.

you can get the complete timing kit from nissanpartswholesale.com for 215 free shipping. Comes with both chains, cam gears, crank gear, both tensioners, all guides, and then you have to purchase the o-ring seperately. Im doing mine wednesday, its gonna be a long day

Good luck trying to do it in one day unless you've done it before. However, it is not really a hard job. Napa sells the timing kit with the cam and crank sprockets, chain, tensioner, and chain guides for $114, you should still go to the dealer and pick up the two oil seals and the front main seal though.

As far as not being handy with cars, it shouldn't be too hard of a job if you know how to work a ratchet. This was the VERY first job I did on my car (granted it took me a week of around 2 hours a day) and it turned out fine. I am not all that mechanically inclined either, so if I can do it, you can. Now get out there and do it :)
