Any idea how much a timing chain costs to get done at a dealership? The car i would put it on has 104k miles so i figure this is necesary. Also a clutch needs to be replaced soon. I don't really know how to do either myself. So, estimates?

dont mess around with the chain unless it rattles(s13) and just get the new clutch.

Don't change the chane unless you want to spend a load of money and/or time. It will cost u over $800 at any average mechanic and over $1500 at a dealer. I changed mine my self and it toulk about three and half days non stop. You have to drop the suspention, oil pan, and covers and the rest of the ****.

I am taking mine to the Nissan dealership, and they are charging $925 to replace my chain. I have almost 150k miles on it, and I am concerned with the rattling noise! I am keeping my '91 fastback for as long as possible, so I am doing preventative maintanance so I won't have to worry about big time problems.

dude.... the rattle will not ruin your chain.. it doesnt even affect the 240 performancewise... I wouldnt spend so much money on it if i was still gonna do it... just go to shop and have them do it for ALOT cheaper!

You are an idiot. If the chain moves at all then you can have serious problems. What happens when your valve is open when the piston hits TDC (easily happens due to timing)? Its a total gangbang on the valve and it generally becomes lodged in the valve train as it is moving which causes a total engine disaster. I just got done stripping down a friends KA that did exactly this. A timing chain can cause all kinds of nightmares if not maintained. Timing chain issues always start with a rattle.

Personally, I prefer the shattered pistons and rods from hitting a valve, I think its really neato. : )

I cost me around $550 for timing chain replacement and full tune up at Dealership about 2 yrs ago. Shouldn't be much more expensive now.

I'm not gonna do it at least now, i only have 105k miles and my car is running strong so i'll wait a while, as funds are pretty low.

what I was trying to say is that the problem is not the Timing Chain but the Timing Chain Guides and Tensioner.... The chain doenst need to be touched...

With your dumbass attitude, i feel VERY sorry for your car. The slightest rattle can be causing harsh damage (It might not necessarily be the timing chain).

My car was quoted at $1,800 canadian for everything at the local nissan dealership. I got it done privately for $80, but i'm not willing to release that information.

My cahin was rattling but I'm only 18 so I saved up the $250 or so to get a timing chain kit from JC Whitney. It took me 6 days and lots of research about how timing works to get it done, I had to raise the engine and lower the front stock sway bar to get the oil pan off. I went through hell for 6 days and no car but I eventually finished and put everything back together, and no more rattling :)

Wow, i wish more people were like you. Save up, buy the parts yourself and DO THE WORK YOURSELF! Man, it's great to hear you did that yourself, great job!!!

From what i have heard, the tensioners are self adjusting, is this true? And that upper timing chain guide is a piece of crap, does make some noise, but at the same time, isn't the answer to all the rattling.

Why do manufactures always claim that timing chains will last the life time of the vehicle as a selling tool at the point of purchase of a vehicle, but always recomend changing it after a few years? I mean, its alot more durable than a belt, so as long as it is maintained and adjusted every so often, would it really last the life of the motor?

The chain will generally last the life of the motor, the tensioners and guides won't. If companies weren't cheap and used quality tensioners and guides the system would last the life of the motor with proper maintenance. : )

For Blink0r: **** off!

If you would have read my latter post you would see that I was trying to explain that if you try and get the job done at a dealer they will make you pay for alot of extra parts and work... CUZ the chain is not the problem, the guides and tensioner are like Daunt said.

Before you come here and insult somebody you better read the whole ****ing thread.

hey crypt, where's the bloods? j/k......

yeah, so, uhm, how do you adjust the tensioners, if possible? Or do they just need to be replaced?

hey crypt, try using a percentage sign as a k, sorta like, "blinkor is a fuc%ing retard!" I think a slash / and this thing < can be used as well, "Shut the fuc/< up blinkor" Gets the point across much better, no offense blink

;)

so the tensioners......
