I have 137,000 miles on mine and it started the slapping noise at about 131,000 but still runs fine.

Never fixed mine, currently at about 140,000 miles. Strangly, mine seems to have stopped making weird noises. Does anyone have any idea why this would be? I can't think of a reason, except for a mechanic who might have fixed it without saying anything.

Before I got rid of the KA to swap my SR I had 210,000 miles on my car with the same timing chain. I guess I was lucky.

Maybe it just chewed the guides up enough that there's nothing for the chain to slap against anymore (this would not be too good). As for me, I dont know if the motor had the original chain or not, i'm inclined to think that it had had it changed...but I changed it all again when I did the rebuild anyway.

I changed my chain at 145k, but now at 10k later it's rattling again on startup, due to what I believe to be low oil pressure. Oh well, a rebuild is coming up soon anyway.

chain and gears @ 140k due to the bottom of the d/s guide cracking in half. Chain was sawing though the lower guide fastener.

My 89 sx was making lots o noise for the last 20k miles. The guides and tensioner went but I didn't know it. It eventually wore a hole through the cover into the cooling channel and leaked water into the crankcase. Had to have it changed at that point (149k). It gets expensive to wait that long. If its making noise inspect and replace the guides and tensioner if necessary.

Thanks for the replys guys, for those who have had their timing go what were the biggest signs of it going, cuz I do have the startup rattle, but now with 10w30 in it, it got a lot better. Plus it doesnt make any sounds as I'm driving. So just wanna know if there are some telltale signs RIGHT before it is busts. Vauge answers are welcome too cuz I know this is one big grey area of a question, everyone will prob have different answers
