Timing chain sounds like it's on the skids, what are my options?

On the drive home tonight I noticed this metallic sound coming from my car. It sounded like someone dragging a chain on the ground. It only happened above 2k rpms (i didnt go over 4 after I heard the noise). So i'm pretty sure it's the chain. So where do I go from here? How much time/money is involved with swapping the chain/tensioner and all that mess compared to swapping a motor?I love how parts on my motor decide to give me trouble right as the semester starts for college... thanks in advance

Easier than swapping a motor. As for price, I'm not exactly sure. You'd probably be looking at somewhere in the $300 range for parts. Upper timing chain, lower timing chain, both lower chain guides and the two appropriate bolts, lower front cover gasket and tensioners. Probably would want to get new valve cover gaskets too. Since you'll need to drop the oil pan and pickup, you might want to replace the gasket and o-ring there too, but maybe that's extraneous.

The "kit" that Courtesy Nissan used to sell included a new water pump, thermostat, crankshaft oil seal and water hose. Unless the chain chewed through the pump assembly, I believe all of this stuff falls under "good to replace while you're in there" but not necessary unless worn.

There are aftermarket timing chain kits. Honestly, I don't know if I trust them since it's such a vital component, but they are much cheaper. I'm sure someone on here can tell you how the aftermarket kits look, quality-wise.

Just a thought but have your removed the top timing chaing guides. It my be hitting on that, ka moters are know for that problem. Or you could have and oil pressure problem. I replaced the front main seal the other weekend. I think it took me about 20hr to get the timing chain cover off, but I had other problems that I had to take care of in the process.

I removed the top and side guides a few months ago. My buddy told me about a good independent nissan shop close to where I live, so I may take the car over there and see what they say.I agree with you mojo, i wouldnt trust timing components to a lesser company.

Yeah, I'm having the same problems, ( timing chain and going back to school soon) When you get yours fixed can you please post what you did and what it cost. How long has yours been makin the noise, mine has been doing it for about 2 months. I wonder how much longer it has left before it all goes to crap.
