my car died the other day 95 240... anyways i wasnt getting any reponse from the throttle, i turned it off thought i might be just the throttle cable, came back then it wouldnt start, so then i was stumped took it to a shop they took off the valve cover and he told me the timing chain had skipped a tooth, now he quoted me 1700 before he took the valve cover off for it, i dont think that sounds right for it to be off one tooth, how screwed up could it be, i thought about a new engine since theyre cheap but mine only has 89k on it, i dont wanna bother with one with twice the mileage.

i searched but everything is about the damn guides.

1700 is too high. However, over 1k is not unreasonable for the job. It is a PITA and is very time consuming. Off one tooth or off 10, they're still gonna basically have to do a timing chain job to get everything realigned as you probably don't know for sure if it skipped one or more. Good luck.

before he does the job just make sure it actually DID skip a tooth. Ask him to show it to you. Look at the FSM before you go.

i will gladly walk you through the procedure of fixing your car if you are a competent mechanic. its not hard but you need a lot of time and tools. i agree you should ask to see it. also there is always the possibility of bent valves. if you need a bargain i am in newport news and i work at a nissan dealership in hampton.
