When I first swapped this Ka24de in I definitly don't remember it having this noise. At first I thought that the fan might be loose. Yet, it seems that it might be coming from the top front of the engine. It isn't consistent and goes away when the car is driving or revving, only to come back at idle. I've driven the car about 20 miles at the most since I put this KA in, and it still drives fine. In the car you don't hear it much either. Could it be the timing chain or is it a rod knock?

I have a video here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3s3NtYJAE3c

I just turne the car on again and it isn't there. Seems like it only happens at idle, when the engine is warmed up.

i cant really tell, it sounds like my ka right before it blew up. but when my timing chain rattled it sounded like popcorn popping. hard to tell from the video.

The thing is that it happens at random. I just had it idling in my garage for 10 mins and it didn't make the noise. Otherwise, everything is fine. It shifts fine, still pulls nice.

That's rod knock.

Your problem is your timing chain, probably the tensioner. They work from oil pressure so as they get old/gunked up they don't provide as much tension at lower rpms, which is why the noise goes away when you rev it. Get an OEM timing chain kit from FRSport and you'll be gravy.

try removing valve cover and look to see if the guides are broken.

I think thats the timing chain guide

Theres some write ups about it on this site, you simply take the top guide because its old or loose causinf it to tap the valve cover

Thanks for the help guys! That is what I thought it was, as it is so random. I'll follow this guide: http://www.nicoclub.com/articles.php?id=105618 and hopefully that's it. Thanks again!

Just have to confirm it's not a rod knock lol. Check timing chain and other things as stated

just to let other people know. if they hear that sound, and it gets worse when the car is warmed up it's rod knock. anything else is usually timing chain or guides
