Post

Hello!

I have a 2005 Nissan Quest base model with about 155,000 miles on it. Other then eating tires, it has performed well. I have two current issues:

1. Timing chain/tensioners/guides, etc. This defect is well known.
2. Odometer display fades in and out. (I found the repair on this forum. Thanks!)

Here is my question: since the engine and transmission have to be removed for the timing chain repair, what else should I replace? In other words, what can I proactively replace now that would save labor in the future? We are giving this van to my daughter and son-in-law. They have two children. I believe it will last another 100K miles. Others have suggested the following:

1. water pump, thermostat, hoses
2. belts
3. engine mounts
4. valve cover gaskets and upper intake gasket
5. spark plugs
6. cam sensors and tensioners

I don't want to waste money, but I don't mind spending now to save time and money later. What else should I replace? I welcome your counsel. Thank you!

Welcome to NICO!
Congrats on keeping your Quest going and passing it along to the family!

You've got a pretty solid list there. If you want a couple of low cost odds and ends that will help out later down the road, you could add:

-cam seals
-crank seal
-front main seal
-rear main seal
-oil pan gasket (probably not needed, but the engine is out.
- new 02 sensor (if you want to do your daughter a favor)

Check out rockauto.com for some good prices on those parts.
