Thanks to the Alaska State government I should be coming into about 1200 bigones here in a week or so, and I totally planned to use this money to fix my poor 240, which has been sitting without an alternator for months. I'm planning to get it fixed, as I don't have the time or skills, and while it was in the shop I figured I'd have the TC tightened, as well as replacing the hood release puller because the cable broke :(

Anyway, I did a search for timing chain information and I saw a lot of posts talking about it being about 1500 dollars to fix. Is this true? How much can I expect to pay to have this baby tuned (its not broken)?
Finally, I'd love to have some recommendations on a reputable shop around Seattle. So far the most convenient location and popular namedrop is upgarage, or Gregs Jap Auto downtown, but I'd love to hear some real endorsements.

I hope to get back on the street soon, appreciate any info, thanks!

Yep, $1500 dollar repair.

I had a guy here in Georgia fix my timing chain for $325.

He replaced the chain, both guides, tensioner, and front main seal, for that price.

The chain itself from an automotive branch should run you $65.

See if you can get the whole kit, and if someone will do the labor for cheap.

My chain was very loose. When the guy redid the front end with the new chain, the motor felt so strong, I was impressed. There was a HUGE amount of difference in replacing the chain. I got a lot of horsepower back, torque, and the motor felt SO strong in the car.

Goodluck!

Mine was $1700. $800 in OEM Parts. But the front of my motor is pretty much brand new now though.

Think about this. Some people charge like $80 an hour for labor and this is like a 12hour job, doing it alone for the first time.

Find a friend who works on cars/240's. If u lived by me I'd have you: help me holding things/handing me tools, buy me lunch, a pack of cigs and like $20. Sucks to not have ppl to help you out =( GL with finding cheaper labor!

I would say to buy the kit and do it yourself... but if you mess up the timing that just makes a bigger problem for you.

Where the hell did you get it done for $325?! Mine is in the shop right now, replacing the entire timing system and they quoted me at like 1400 between parts and labor. A bunch of bolts have stripped out too, so be prepared to have to pay even more. :ohno:

R & D Performance in Powder Springs, Ga.

The guys name is TurboDave.

He is really big in the 240 community, with a drift team named, Team Ginger Beard.

If you would of shopped around, you wouldn't be paying $1600.

You own a 240, learn the community.

I got what I paid for, and the MOTOR WAS ROCK SOLID WHEN HE WAS DONE.

The motor felt so MUCH stronger, I couldn't believe it.

You're gettin ripped off bro. The chain kit is $65 bucks, and to a professional who does those all the time, they take 2 hours.

The nissan dealership here in town told me 1300 bucks to replace the timing chain and setting it, at that point i said the hell with that and bought all the guides and new gaskets and seals, new water pump and did it myself in one day. spent maybe $100...its really not that hard as long as you can follow directions, theres even a sticky for it in the technical forum.

Well obviously shipping an engine to alaska would be an issue but I'd buy another ka. When I was building my ka, I found one on ebay with all the same stuff as mine plus more for 1500. look around

Just dont do it, you don't really need to. I thought i needed to but it always makes noises and stuff so i wasn't too worried. I would definitely change the tensioner though seeing how it is hydraulic and can wear over time.

no chain guide=crack in front cover and lots of metal or plastic in the oil pan eventually from chain slap. SO at least that and tensioner.
