very common yes. But go see for yourself. Run the motor and try to pinpoint where its coming from. It could be anything suck as a loose pulley or bad timing. Checking the timing chain is a very simple task. 12mm and 10mm socket takes the bolts right off. Very simple and easy task. just use a good gasket maker when putting the cover back on. GOOD LUCK!

theres also this little guard on top of the timing chain just take it off if its still there it could be causing rattling also take off the upper timing chain tensioner and clean it i'm getting a new coupe tomorrow i'll have my friend take pics of all the stuff i do so we can make a tut i'll probably make a video instead for youtube and stick it on here but honestly... you'll never truly rid yourself of that noise

I know it's not in the top. It's coming from the bottom by the altenator side.

drop the oilpan like today!..check your oil too for metal fragments..and fish around in the pan for any metal objects..if ya find nothing..then drop your lower cover off...and see what ya find...you need to do this as this might get critical if ya let it go any ferther without attention....good luck..keep us posted.

dual cam KA's have to timing chain guides.. one at the top, which is very easy to get at, and one about halfway up the block.. the guides are the most common causes of rattling right next to valve lifters.. simply removing the timing guides will get rid of your rattle.. do you notice any rattling when accellerating or decellerating?

he says its not on top homie...at this point..i think its a good idea he drop the pan..and pull the covers anyways..to inspect the chain/guides and what may be lurking in his oil pan by now.

yes i know this.. i was trying to explain how there is 1 or 2 more guides lower in the timing cover, for the crankshaft chain, considering its significantly longer than the camshaft chain.. just start pulling the cover off see what you can find.. make sure you check the chain while your at it too... most common things are the chain will be worn down in the center or the links will start to crack..

I have a ka24e and mine never rattled until the car started to warm up than eventually it rattled 24/7. I agree with everyone else and drop the oil pan + take the cover off since it ain't the top guide. I heard the ka24de can cope without the top guide but not to sure about that might be some nonsense I saw on some other forum but yea....While you replace the guides you might as well replace everything else since youre already there such as Tensioner(s), chain, water pump, and oil pump.
