Once the weather over here (MI) gets nice I am going to remove those notorious upper chain guides (both top and lower: both are considered not necessary by Nissan as seen in their TBS) and make sure that the tensioners are clean and not gunked up with oil. If so, clean them. This should fix those minor timing chain rattles. Unless your lower chain guide is messed up.

Would anyone be interested in a write-up (with pics of course) of this procedure?

Yes, yes, yes! This write-up would be VERY much appreciated, as I know for a fact that there's quite a few people who are experiencing this problem- Like he said, you can never have too many writeups

Just checked the weather forcast for the next 10 days.... Yikes its gonna snow all week and stay in 20s and low 30s for the entier 10 days... I cant do this until the temp goes above freezing Sorry I dont have a garage so I have to do this outside...

Anyways there are three possible reasons why timing chains rattle.1. Oil pressure is low - The tensioners to keep the chains tight are operated by oil pressure. So if the oil pressure is low then your chains will not be tight so they will be flapping and hitting against the guides.2. Tensioner is gunked up-If you do not change the oil frequently eventually oil gunk is going to build around the tensioner and prevent the tensioner from fully tightening the chain hence the chain will flap around and hit the guides.3. Tensioners are broken-If the tensioners are broken then... obviously chain will not be tight.

If your chains are flapping around bad then it will eventually break the chain guides and once they break....... they can fall into places where they are not supposed to and snap the chains. Once the chains snap your pistons go boom and your vavles go boom. and $$$Ka Ching$$$ That's about the worst case scenario. So its pretty important to get rid of those guides ASAP.

If your lower timing chain already ate through the lower chain guide and its making alot of noise then.... its going to be a PITA repair as you have to remove the front cover to see whats going on...
