timing chain rattle fix question

im looking at the how to article on fixing the timing chain rattle... is it absolutely necessary to set the engine to top dead center before taking off the timing chain guides and the distrubuter???

you'll need to set it to TDC anyway later when you're trying to match up the links of the chains to the punchmarks on the sprockets later. So yes.
