How do I tell if there is any damage to the valve train when a timing chain snaps? I know the KA is an interference engine so contact between valves and pistons is likely, but is there a way to tell if the chain snapped at just the right time to prevent damage?
I'm about to buy an s13 on the cheap because the timing chain snapped. I went and looked at it, they guy knows it's the timing chain but doesn't have the time or resources to fix it. He got in and turned the key, it just kept turning over. I took off the oil cap and sure enough the exhaust cam was not spinning, so I know it's something timing related.
When he turned it over, it made no abnormal noises at all, it just didn't start. Is it possible that it just needs a new timing chain? I really don't want to pull the head off to check the valves and pistons, I just want to know if I can pull of the timing covers and slap a new chain on there. I don't want to take the head off just to see that everything is fine, then have to get the head re-surfaced and buy a new head gasket and head studs. Is there any way of accessing it without really taking it apart?
Thanks guys.
